Milad-un-Nabi 2026
Milad-un-Nabi follows 12 Rabi al-Awwal, the birth date of the Prophet Muhammad. It runs for about 1 day in the regions where it is observed.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The largest Milad-un-Nabi procession in India, with the main procession through the old city. It is a public holiday in the state and the day is widely observed.
The moulood recitation tradition is distinctive here and is practised widely, in Arabi-Malayalam and in the local mosques. It is the primary form the observance takes in the state.
Observed with gatherings, naat recitation and processions in the old city areas. Barawafat illumination is common.
Kolkata has a well-attended Milad procession, and the day is widely observed across the state's Muslim communities and in Assam.
Processions and gatherings in the old city and in areas such as Bhendi Bazaar, with food distribution organised by mohalla committees.
