Milad-un-Nabi, also called Eid-e-Milad, Mawlid, or Barawafat in South Asia, marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad on the twelfth of Rabi al-Awwal. In 2026 it is expected around 26 August. In India it is a public holiday in most states.
It is observed with processions, gatherings where the life and teachings of the Prophet are recounted, recitation of devotional poetry, and distribution of food and sweets. In Hyderabad, the Milad-un-Nabi procession is a major public event, and in Kerala the Malabar tradition of maulid recitation (moulood) is distinctive and widely practised.
Observance varies. Many Muslim communities, particularly in South Asia and parts of Africa, mark the day with public celebration and processions. Others, including several Sunni reformist movements and the Deobandi and Ahl-i-Hadith traditions, do not observe it as a festival, regarding the public celebration of a birthday as not established in early Islamic practice. Both positions exist within the Indian Muslim community.
In India the day is also Barawafat, and for many families it involves visiting graves, distributing food, and reading the Prophet's biography. Because it falls in Rabi al-Awwal, it also comes shortly after Muharram in some years.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
