Hanuman Jayanti 2026
Hanuman Jayanti follows Purnima (full moon) of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra. It runs for about 1 day in the regions where it is observed.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
Chaitra Purnima observance with fasting, temple visits, akhand Sundarkand and heavy sindoor and chameli oil offerings. The gym and akhara traditions mark it prominently.
The Aaku Puja, offering thousands of leaves at Anjaneya temples, with devotees observing a 41-day deeksha beforehand. Kondagattu and Yadadri are among the largest.
Observed in the month of Margazhi rather than Chaitra, with abhishekam at Hanuman temples and recitation in Tamil.
Hanuman Jayanti is observed on a local calendar date, with temple abhishekam and the Hanuman Chalisa recited in Kannada at Anjaneya temples.
Large crowds at Hanuman temples, particularly in Pune and Nashik, with sindoor and oil offerings and the Sundarkand recited through the day.
