Hanuman Jayanti marks the birth of Hanuman, on the full moon of Chaitra. In 2026 it falls on 1 April. It is observed across India, though the date and name differ regionally — Tamil Nadu observes it in the month of Margazhi, Karnataka and Andhra observe Hanuman Jayanti on different dates tied to local calendars, and the Chaitra Purnima date is the North Indian one.
The day's observance is simple and physical: a fast, a visit to a Hanuman temple, and the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and the Sundarkand. Hanuman is offered sindoor and chameli oil, and the idol is anointed with them. A common ritual is applying sindoor to one's own forehead, from the story of Hanuman covering himself in sindoor to make himself more like Rama.
Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman's days, and Hanuman Jayanti is one of the largest temple days of the year. In Maharashtra, the day sees enormous crowds at the Dashabhuja Ganpati and Hanuman temples; in Andhra and Telangana, the 41-day deeksha and the Aaku Puja (offering 11,000 leaves) are observed at temples such as Kondagattu and Sri Anjaneya Swamy temples.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
