Bathe early in the day and take a vrat. Many Jains keep a complete fast, others take only one meal, and all avoid root vegetables, meat and alcohol.
Bathe the Mahavira idol at the temple with water, milk and saffron, offer flowers, and recite the Kalpa Sutra and the Namokar Mantra.
In many cities, a decorated chariot carrying the idol is taken through the streets, with the community following. Palitana and Ahmedabad have the largest.
