Specific practices rather than a general mood.

Bathing and a fast — many Jains keep a full or partial fast on the day.
Abhishek of the Mahavira idol at the temple, and the offering of flowers and fruit.
Rath yatra processions with the idol, most notably at Palitana and in Ahmedabad.
Reading and reciting the Kalpa Sutra and the teachings of Mahavira.
Donating to animal welfare organisations, gaushalas and animal shelters — the most direct expression of ahimsa.
Donating food, medicine, books and clothing, and funding free medical camps.
Temple decoration and illumination, and community meals (with strictly vegetarian, often Jain, cooking).
Visiting Palitana, Girnar, Shikharji and other major Jain pilgrimage sites.

Gujarat
Palitana, on the Shatrunjaya hill, has over nine hundred temples and holds the largest Mahavir Jayanti gathering in the world. Ahmedabad also holds a major rath yatra, and Gujarat observes a public holiday.
Maharashtra
Significant Jain populations in Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur, with temple observances, processions and animal welfare activity. A public holiday in the state.
Rajasthan, Delhi, MP
Major Jain temple centres at Mount Abu (Dilwara temples), Ranakpur, Jaisalmer and Shikharji in Jharkhand. Public or restricted holidays across several states.
Karnataka
Shravanabelagola and the Bahubali statue sites hold observances, and Karnataka's Jain community, which is significant in trade, observes the day. A public holiday in Karnataka.
